I Opened My Etsy Shop CosmicRenegade

I opened my Etsy shop CosmicRenegade with my costume jewelry designs. It is starting out small; however, I will be adding more items on a regular basis. Right now it is mostly necklaces and some earrings. As time goes on I will add some bracelets and handmade items other than jewelry.

During the 80’s I wholesaled costume jewelry to a lot of shops in the West Village, East Village and a few shops in Westchester County and New Jersey. This is a new venture for me to be selling online retail but I have been getting some experience with my vintage Etsy shop recently. I have been making some Pins on Pinterest for a few of the items and slowly the shops are getting noticed. I still have a good amount of beads that I saved from the 80’s so some of my stock is vintage. This pink chain-link necklace with silver chain link on the back is a one-of-a-kind necklace since I have not been able to find pink chain link again that dimension.

If you have been to this blog before you know I like upcycling. I recently upcycled the necklace in the photo below out of vintage metal buttons. It took some playing with but I figured out how to make it work. I am hoping to be making more items with upcycled pieces. Another necklace pictured below is made from pink vintage shells. When I found it the metal links were rusty and falling apart. I upcycled it with new jewelry hardware and used faux pearls instead of the dark wooden beads it originally came with. The result is a lighter, brighter necklace that mixes a more contemporary look with the vintage shells. Also while many of my pieces will have all new beads, a large number will have a mix of vintage beads, or mixed media in general. I made my first necklace when I was seven and I have always enjoyed designing jewelry and making things. It is tremendously rewarding to be creative. I included a few pictures of other various pieces I have made.

I did go to a really cool thrift shop in Philadelphia recently, Philly Aids Thrift. It was totally awesome and an incredibly fun store. The music was lively and the way they set up the shop into various sections, even with a vintage section, created an atmosphere that is quite unique. I will wait and do a whole post about Philadelphia vintage shops, along with more about Philly Aids Thrift, when I get a chance to go visit more of the vintage shops there. I went on a Monday so several were closed.

I have a feeling I will be going back to Philadelphia quite often. As far as day trips out of NYC it is a five-hour trip from Brooklyn and back but it is great to get out of Dodge and go somewhere different. The architecture there is rather awesome too in terms of old homes and historical buildings. I included just a couple of photographs.

Well I hope you are all enjoying summer. We are having heat waves so I am postponing the Dottie Angel dress post about the last dress I made just a bit longer. I made it out of a thicker fabric thinking I could wear it year-round but it is a tad too thick for a heat wave!!

Dottie Angel Dress I Made For My Daughter

My daughter asked me to make her a Dottie Angel dress so I decided that was my task for a Christmas present. Meanwhile I had not made a dress from a pattern in about thirty years. Simplicity pattern 1080, known as the Dottie Angel Dress, has twenty-eight steps in order to make dress A, which is the one my daughter wanted. I literally worked on about two steps at a time or the whole thing would have seemed very overwhelming. I had never worked with bias tape before but with patience it all started to make sense. My mother, who has far more sewing experience than I do, was surprised I was working with bias tape – she thought it over-complicates things. I do think it helps keep things neat and tidy once you get used to it.

My stitching is not perfect and there were a few times I took out a seam and redid it to attempt to get it in better shape. I need more practice! Anyway in the long run the dress came out lovely. Emily likes muted colors and I thought the orange sherbet colored bias tape perked up the brown floral background. The pink pockets were made from Liberty of London fabric, which has small bits of that orange sherbet color in the background. I am a complete sucker for any fabrics with brown background and florals as the print. Emily wears a lot of brown as well.

When I first came across Tif Fussel’s website  I of course wanted her dresses, which she refers to as “frocks,” as apparently many women do. Her dresses are vintage-inspired and feminine and have that soft, relaxed, country look to them. They tend to remind me of German dirndls when they are made with florals or small prints, and the strap that ties at the back accentuates the waist. As a child I wore dirndls for several years when we lived in Germany. When I used to work at April Cornell as a sales lady many women spoke about the modern workplace’s clothing being so androgynous. These women were coming in looking for floral dresses that captured a softer, feminine look. Tif has mentioned in her blog that she thinks she “was a farmer’s wife in another life.” She also refers to her style as “granny chic.” Well she has definitely done her part to make granny chic popular.

I plan on making a Dottie Angel dress or two for myself as well. Emily bought me some fabric for a Christmas present that I plan on using for one dress. She took me over to Fancy Tiger Crafts in Denver with my gift certificate and I picked out a soft grey print fabric with little navy and red bicycles. I might even make a couple that have solid fabric on top and a floral or patterned print on the bottom since some offices are very conservative about prints. I will wait and see where I am working to figure that out. One of the things that is so nice about making your own clothing is that you can choose the fabrics and how you want to arrange things. I also think this dress would be beautiful if upcycled from a vintage sheet set.

Emily wanted to illustrate how she winterized her dress quickly for a snowy, winter Colorado day. It was Christmas Day in Denver. With her sweater, scarf, hat and army jacket she looks cozy, comfy and pretty in her Dottie Angel dress. I like the mix of army jacket with floral. It transforms the outfit to a grunge look from the late 1980’s to early 1990’s. Emily has long been a fan of granny type boots. Plus she is a crazy for hats, which seems to run in my family. Whenever I am in Colorado I always love how once winter hits it is so common to see people wearing their hats indoors as well as outside. There is something so peaceful about being wrapped up in a hat and a warm sweater.

I hope you enjoyed this post about the Dottie Angel dress. I certainly enjoyed making it and hope to make a few more. The design is a classic and therefore is a wonderful addition to any lady’s wardrobe.

Upcycled Raspberry Linen and Silk Dress

I originally saw a dress similar to this one on Pinterest. It was made by clothestalking. Immediately I really wanted a dress like that one. Since I have been upcycling my clothing the last couple of years I knew I had a top or two similar to the boxy shape loose top of the clothestalking dress. Plus I had the skirt of an old silk Thai dress my uncle had sent me years ago. I needed a way to put those pieces to use. So when I finally got the time I upcycled this dress. I like that it is loose and comfy, but it is also a combination of rose-like colors, which are some of the colors that look best on me. I like the avant-garde look of the outfit. I have always liked avant-garde garments but usually can’t afford them on my budget. That is where even simple sewing really can come in handy; in being able to create what I yearn for but otherwise would have to do without.

I did have to sew my pieces together from the top, so that I could make sure I was keeping the line straight on the top of the silk. I pinned it from underneath when I had it reversed. I didn’t add pockets where the sides extend. I might later on but I doubt I would put anything in them so I decided to skip them for now. This dress is very comfortable and the fabric makes it such that I can wear it year round if I wear layers of warm t-shirts, undergarments or stockings underneath. Plus I like wearing it with my batik jacket from the early 1990’s, which has lovely fall colors in its pattern. The top piece of the dress was from Liberty of London when I worked there. It was part of my yearly allotment of clothing that we were given for wearing to work. The Thai dress from my uncle was kind of huge on me, so eventually I decided to cut it and keep the skirt from it. One thing I like about this type of upcycling is that when the top wears out (which it inevitably will before the bottom does, since it is thinner fabric, and lighter in color), I can replace it with another top. So upcycling can really extend the life of used garments, and create the chance to upcycle them again down the road. That really reduces reproduction energy and effort from the chain of production in mass manufacturing. When I was a really young single parent I used to think of this as the extend-a-life-program. I had lots of items in that program. Now with upcycling being so common we have a new word for it!!

Well I hope you enjoyed this post. I am working on sewing another dress. That one is from a pattern though. I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving. I did, plus I tried out a new recipe for gluten-free stuffing that I might share soon in a reduced-packaging post. I always like to try to cook as many things as I can that don’t require buying prepackaged mixes, or boxes. I cooked at home then went out later in the day to a friend’s apartment and spent time with her family. That was great fun.

I will have some street art from the Grove Street stop in Jersey City coming up. Sorry I have fallen behind here on postings. It is quite frustrating how much time and effort it takes to find work so I have been juggling these things. I am grateful for what I do have and hopefully the work piece will fall into place soon!! Meanwhile my walking and my right foot are doing much better since I have been going to physical therapy. I have been able to walk around a lot and hope to get lots of Christmas window photos for you this year.

Halloween Photos From NYC

These are just a few photos I took on Halloween in NYC. My friend and I hung out over at Café Reggio on MacDougal Street rather than try to see the parade on Sixth Avenue. It was really crowded I am sure and this way I knew my foot was safe from getting stepped on since it is still recovering from surgery.

There were lots of costumes that revolved around normal everyday clothing. Most of those consisted of some sort of Day of the Dead makeup and hats. From where I was sitting I was at more of a profile angle so I didn’t take photos while I was seated – only of one couple that stood still for a bit to be photographed. It was a very good view of costumes from there.

One of my favorite costumes was a lady dressed in all vintage black and grey and she looked like a women who rose from the dead. That was a cool costume. We wanted to go into Washington Square Park but I forgot they close the park on Halloween after dark. Later on as we walked up to 14th Street to get the train we ran into lots more people with costumes and that is when I could take a bunch of photos.

It was fun to be down in the Village again for Halloween. It is always crowded but except for 14th street it wasn’t too hectic. Union Square was really fun though since there were a bunch of people there in their costumes that had probably just finished the parade and were hanging out posing for photos. I think Halloween is fun. It allows people a chance to be a bit wild and giddy. Even I wore costumes and had crazy makeup on. I don’t dress up every year but it was fun to do it since I hadn’t in a while.

I wore a loungewear pantsuit from the mid-1980’s. It was from J. Crew and I think it makes a good scarecrow outfit. I still had this stored at my mother’s a while back so when she moved I took it and I was surprised it still fits. I have lost some weight the last couple of years when I developed an allergy to gluten and gave it up.

I finished that dress I upcycled so I will try to get that post to you in the next few days. I hope you are enjoying fall as much as I am. I think it is just beautiful. I will be glad when it cools off a bit though. It is slightly strange that it keeps going up to seventy degrees over and over in October. I want some real fall weather before the winter comes!
